Government Building Code Information, State By State


When it comes to developing and enforcing building codes, each state does things a little differently. Below is a list of various government offices, as well as a few private organizations, that deal with building codes, state by state. If you're not sure who enforces building codes in your area, the office(s) for you state might be a good place to start. We have provided links to their websites, and phone numbers, where applicable.

We will make every attempt to update this information on a yearly basis, but if you happen to find that one of the links below is no longer working, or a phone number has changed, please contact us so we can make a correction.



Alabama:
  • State of Alabama Building Commission (Phone: 334-242-4082) - This state department enforces a state building code that applies only to state buildings, schools (public and private), hotels, and movie theaters
  • For residential building codes, you would need to contact your municipal government offices.

Alaska:
  • Alaska Codes - A comprehensive website with information about how building codes work in Alaska. You'll also find contact information for various state and city officials who deal with code enforcement.

Arizona:
  • There is no state-level department in Arizona that oversees building codes. You would need to contact your municipal government offices.

  • Colorado County Contacts - In Colorado, there is no state-level department overseeing local building code adoption and enforcement. This link will take you to a list of contact information for county-level departments that deal with building codes.

Connecticut:
  • Office of State Building Inspector (Phone: 800-842-0200) - Part of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety; they establish and enforce all building codes within the state of Connecticut.

Delaware:
  • Division of Public Health (Phone: 302-856-5122) - In Delaware, building codes are handled at the county level; however, regulations and inspections for plumbing are governed by the Division of Public Health.

  • There is no state-level department in Illinois that oversees general building codes. You would need to contact your municipal government offices.
