Customer Reviews For This Product

CENTREX Central composting toilet systems provide the look of a traditional bathroom toilet, with the green benefits of composting. You must be able to place the central composting unit in the area below the toilet. The CENTREX 1000 NE system is the unit that is installed on the lower level, and the price does not include the actual toilet. The toilet fixtures to be installed in the bathroom are sold separately.

The CENTREX 1000 NE system is designed for applications with water supply, but without a supply of electricity. It is a low flush central system that measures 22-1/2" wide, so is ideal for small spaces. It is designed for for light to medium seasonal use. The CENTREX 1000 NE does not have a fan or heater like the electric CENTREX 1000. However, a 4" vertical vent stack that runs from the top left of the unit up through the roof provides for odorless operation by drawing air upward and producing a partial vacuum within the unit. If the CENTREX 1000 NE is installed in an area that may be subject to a downdraft, it is recommended that you install the optional 12 Volt fan (sold separately). This fan draws 1.4 watts and can be powered by a solar panel and/or 12 Volt battery.

CENTREX 1000 units are tested and certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and are listed to comply with NSF-ANSI Standard #41, the only North American performance standard for composting toilets. This means that CENTREX 1000 systems are certified to produce clean, dry, safe and sanitary compost without odor during operation. Visit the NSF website to see the CENTREX 1000's NSF Certification Listing.

How to operate the CENTREX 1000 NE:
  • When initially starting up your system you will need to add some Compost Sure Blue (hemp stalk bulking material) to the Bio-Drum™ as well as some Microbe Mix.
  • You can use your favorite brand of toilet paper as the composting toilet will compost all types without a problem.
  • For daily use, add a cupful of Compost Sure Blue per person, per day of use. You will need to rotate the drum 5 or 6 full revolutions every 2-3 days, while unit is in use. When using the toilet system for short periods, just rotate before you leave, such as at the end of a weekend.
  • You will need to move some of the compost to the finishing drawer when the Bio-Drum™ is half to 2/3 full. This is an easy process to complete by releasing the drum lock and rotating the drum backwards. This clean process allows the finished compost to drop into the finishing drawer without requiring you to come into contact with fresh material.
  • The compost then is left in the finishing drawer for at least 4 weeks so it can finish and sanitize. During this perioed it is kept separate from the fresh material in the toilet to assure no contamination occurs. The finished compost can be removed from the drawer after the 4 week period. Just pull the drawer out by hand, no tools are needed.
  • Your finished compost will look and smell just like regular compost that comes from a garden composter. Add it to your flowers, for great results.

Composting Toilet

  • Central non-electric system that uses water
  • Requires one pint low flush toilets, which are SOLD SEPARATELY
  • The CENTREX 1000 NE is not recommended for residential or continuous use. The patented Bio-Drum™ provides temporary composting capacity of 4 adults or a family of 6.
  • NSF tested and certified for a continuous 6 months at maximum rated capacity (click here to view NSF certification)
  • All Sun-Mar units feature 3-chamber technology:
    • The patented Bio-Drum™, where compost is mixed and aerated
    • The Evaporating Chamber, where excess liquid is evaporated
    • The Finishing Drawer, where finished compost is kept separate from unfinished material
  • Odorless operation is provided by a 4" vent stack which runs vertically through the roof. This draws air upward and maintains a partial vaccuum in the unit.
  • If the location may be subject to a downdraft, we recommend installing the optional 12 Volt fan (sold separately) for additional air flow
