What is a composting toilet? Composting toilets are designed to decompose waste into clean, sanitary, non-offensive compost; literally the same end product that you'd buy at a nursery or garden center! Composting toilets operate without odor because of a venting system that maintains a partial vacuum within the toilet at all times, constantly drawing air downward and then up and out the vent stack. Composting toilets are a great alternative to a traditional toilet because they use little or no water, cost thousands of dollars less to install than other methods of waste management, and they are great for the environment. Composting toilets can literally be put anywhere you need a toilet: sheds, pool houses, cottages, barns, security outposts, dormitories, even mobile homes and boats! The Composting Toilet Store offers a variety of models to accommodate any need and every situation. Not sure which composting toilet is right for you? Visit our Product Selection Guide for a side by side comparison of all our models.

If you're considering a composting toilet, the first important decision you'll have to make is whether to buy a self contained unit or a central system. Self contained units are ideal for people who want a product that is quick and simple to install. All of our self contained units are waterless, which means there is no plumbing to run, and several of them require no drain hookup, which also simplifies the installation process. The only thing you have to do with a self contained unit is install the vent stack which is included with the product. The vent stack ensures odorless operation of the unit. A central system, on the other hand, is a little more complicated to install because it requires a separate toilet fixture in the bathroom and a central unit, which contains the composting Bio-Drum, on a lower level. A central system is ideal for a family who is concerned about having a more traditional-looking unit in the bathroom, and who have the ability to install the central composting unit in a lower level such as a basement or cellar.

If you are interested in a Central system, there are several other choices to make, such as whether you want a water flush or waterless unit. Both options are available, depending on your needs and desires. You will also have the option of an electric or non-electric system. Please keep in mind that some of the non electric systems do require fans. If you purchase such a system, you'll have to provide a DC battery and some method of powering the fan. We do offer a solar panel in our Accessories category that could be used for this purpose, though you'll have to provide your own battery.
