The Sun-Mar EXCEL NE is a non-electric version of the Sun-Mar EXCEL, the highest capacity self-contained toilet and the preferred self-contained model for heavy cottage or continuous residential use. The EXCEL NE was first launched in 1981, and it has long been the standard toilet for those living off the grid. Because it is a non-electric unit, the EXCEL NE does not have a fan or heater, like the EXCEL electric unit does. Odorless operation is achieve by a 4" vent mounted at the top rear of the unit which acts like a chimney on a wood stove by drawing air into the toilet and maintaining a partial vacuum within the unit. The EXCEL NE is also waterless, which means it's easy to install because there's no plumbing required. There is a 1" drain at the rear of the unit that should be connected.
If the EXCEL NE is going to be used residentially or heavily, or if it's in a location that may be subject to downdraft, an optional 12 Volt fan should be installed in the vent stack. This fan draws 1.4 watts and can be powered by a solar panel and/or 12 Volt battery. The optional 12 Volt fan is sold separately.

When you purchase an EXCEL, you are literally purchasing the unit that sets the standard for self-contained composting toilets!
Operation of the EXCEL NE:
- For initial start up, add some Compost Sure to the Bio-Drum™ together with some Microbe Mix.
- The composting toilet will process all kinds of toilet paper, so no need to change your brand.
- For ongoing operation, add Compost Sure as specified in the product instruction manual. Rotate the drum 5 or 6 full revolutions, every 2-3 days when in use. When using for shorter periods, just rotate before you leave.
- When the Bio-Drum™ is half to 2/3 full, you will need to move some of the compost to the finishing drawer by releasing the drum lock and rotating the drum backwards. This quick clean process causes the finished compost to dropinto the finishing drawer. You never come into contact with fresh material.
- The compost should be left for at least 4 weeks so it can finish and sanitize. In the finishing drawer, it will be isolated from contamination by fresh material in the toilet. Once 4 weeks have passed, you can remove the finished compost from the finishing drawer at any time. The drawer is easily pulled out by hand; no tools are needed to open it.
- The finished product is clean, dry, non-offensive, and sanitary. You can add it to your flowers or around your bushes. It will look and smell just like any other regular compost that might come out of a garden composter.
